Who Wins When You Lose?

Over the past several weeks I have spoken to many people regarding the upcoming vote on video gambling.  I let them know that I plan to Vote "Yes" to "Prohibit" video gambling in Forest Park.  Inevitably the conversation goes to money and their belief is that the Village makes a lot of money from video gambling.   At that point I ask if they know how the money is distributed and the answer has always been "No."  Then I point out that the distribution of all money is mandated by Illinois statute and here is how it shakes out.  If I go out now and gamble and lose $100, this is how my loss is distributed.

$35.00 (35%) goes to the bar owner(s)

$35.00 (35%) goes to the terminal operator, the company that provided the gambling machines

$25.00 (25%) goes to the State of Illinois

$5.00 (5%) goes to the Village of Forest Park

Yes, you read that correctly, only $5.00 out of every $100.00 lost by a gambler is guaranteed to stay in Forest Park.

Please think about this when you vote on this important question.

Vote "Yes" to Prohibit video gambling.

Gloria Backman

Forest Park resident

Yes, let's hope that Bill updated his voter registration and doesn't try and vote in FP this November. Bill have you registered in the new place you reside? I hope so.

Johnny, Johnny, Johnny- good luck "silencing (me) and (my) whiney cronies." Not gonna happen. And your dismissive language toward citizens who are simply voicing their concerns on a local issue is emblematic of the sort of arrogance and disrespect people like you and your poor, put upon brother have exhibited for far too long. Folks have finally had enough. And, Johnny- when I'm kicking back in my fisherman's cottage on the banks of the Douro in Portugal this winter, I'll STILL be commenting here. Deal with it, sport.

Billy, Billy, Billy- the question was - "how much have I donated to the Pro-VG effort- answer $0- to date. I also give $ to Fenwick, United Way, St. Luke's, Cancer society, Autism, FP Soccer, few Universities, Misericordia, and many other needy charities. I believe in giving to GOOD causes with proper foundations. So maybe today I will add funds to the Pro-VG effort to hopefully silence the likes of you and your whiney cronies. Again- you no longer live in FP- worry about your new adopted town.

Of course, Jerry, John DID give $215 to the Forest Park PAC, and his poor put-upon brother Mark got more than $4,200 from that PAC for his failed 2015 campaign. So PACs are only questionable when members of his family aren't benefitting from them, apparently. Btw, we still haven't seen a break down on the sources of that $35,200 the pro gambling PAC started out with in August. Maybe it was the Gambling Ferry.

Jerry - I gave $0 dollars, nor do I have any ownership interest in any bar/restaurant in Forest Park. (Clear?) However I do support these business people who have invested in our town and always are the 1st to hold a fundraiser or donate to a cause. I volunteered many personal hours for many FP events/ programs etc- so YES I have a vested (sweat equity) in our town. My reference to YOU and Geoff (not Jordan) stating "your" this or "your" that -I only corrected to help your factually attack me.

I agree, 5% is a pittance. Would the bar owners be so enamored with the split if they were only getting 5%.

John, I would like to know where this YOUR is coming from that Jordan and I supposedly refer to you by. Also, you now refer to the money that bars owners make, but what has been pushed is how much better the village is doing because of their cut. A bit over 300,000 in 2 1/2 years, and that includes all fees. That does not do diddly for the village. by the way, since you were happy to tell how much the Backman's gave how about you tell us how much you gave.

As usual, John Hosty is being disingenuous at least and dishonest at worst, Jordan. His statement "Let me know when you plan to make such a venture into playing your $100 on VG, vs the $2550 you & Steve invested in the PAC" is a clear suggestion that it's somehow preferable to gamble with your money rather than use your money to defend your legal rights. Legal rights, I'd add, that were intentionally blocked by John's poor, ever so put upon brother Mark, through b.s. petitions he circulated and filed for the sole purpose of keeping a legitimate referendum off the ballot.

Thanks Jordan for clarifying the PAC/Go Fund Me- their was NO digging nor "creepy, threatening, dark" as Geoff tries to indicate- info is all public. My reference to the Backmans' $ donations is directly related to her breakdown of where her $100 gambling investment would go (my point was $35 of that helps local establishment do better things and pay taxes, etc). Even with my disdain for this family due to their constant attack of my brother- I did NOT get personal and kept a logical economic response- So Geoff not a Dirty trick or Cronyism. Also Jerry and Geoff's reference to "your" is broadly incorrect too- YES I support the businesses and will VOTE NO, but I am not a "YOUR"- I am a ME.

Jerry, Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming is the ballot initiative PAC he is referring to. In compliance with campaign law we must form a PAC when donations total over $5000 and report all donations over $150. You will find detailed accounting of our donations and expenses reported to the state.

Jerry Webster

John, what PAC are you talking about, the one that you support that hides who gives money? If the vote Yes had a PAC you would not be able to find out who gave money or how much. Keep shoveling the manure John, I really want greener grass next spring.

Mr. Hosty, a large number of people- all residents- have given till it hurts a little. The things your pro-gambling group does- FOIA'ing emails between a husband and wife, doxxing critics on Facebook, trying to damage a veterinary business because of a family connection, threatening me with libel, and now posting the exact amount of a donation from one of our supporters is creepy, threatening, dark... and fits right in with the dirty tricks and cronyism we've seen all along. And it's not working. In a few days, public records for the donations to the pro-gambling group will be public. All our funds- a few thousand overall, against your $35 thousand so far- have come from residents and homeowners, here in Forest Park. It will be interesting to see where yours comes from.

There's more than just Steve and Gloria Backman to "thank" ... John. A dozen people stepped up and paid for the more than $10,000 in legal fees required to fight off the bar owners' dishonest shadow campaign to keep Forest Park voters from exercising their rights to vote on this issue. Besides Steve and Gloria, Marty Tellalian and Kristin McCoy contributed 4-figure sums, and eight others made generous contributions, including Kate Nolan, Mark Boroughf, Amy Binns-Calvey, Donna McKune, Elizabeth Gould, Brian Kuhr, Brian Kuhr Mark Kuczewski and Dan Marcus. Take a bow, y'all.

Gloria- Thank you for highlighting that $35 goes to the Bar/Restaurant's who then in turn are paying Property Taxes, donating to local clubs-charities or improving their establishments. These same establishments are drawing people to Forest Park to spend money on food/beverage and they may also wander down the street and purchase an ice-cream or antique. It is the big picture, not the single thorn driving the town apart. Let me know when you plan to make such a venture into playing your $100 on VG, vs the $2550 you & Steve invested in the PAC.

I don't know for sure but I think Mark is responding to the opinion piece not another commenter. Everyone sure has their panties in a bunch.

Bill Dwyer

Is being honest that difficult, Mark? Roger didn't say "the percentages" bothered him. He said he was casting his vote on the principle behind the referendum. His post was just three sentences, a mere 33 words. Should be quite simple to read and comprehend. Unless you don't want to.

Jerry Webster

Posted: October 8th, 2018 7:03 PM

Mark, as usual you misrepresent what some one else has said. Roger is right, before a single machine was installed a binding referendum should have been taken. That isn't what happened, the Village decided to go against the voters and side with the bar owners. I find it interesting that with most on the VG on Madison they are completing with each other not other towns.

Mark Luptak

Please don't misrepresent the issue: It's the state government that defined that law and its procedures. Monies are coming into the village businesses and the local government as well. If the percentages bother you, talk to your representative. Don't look to arbitrarily discount needed revenue without a way to replace it..

Roger Allan Delott

Many vote Yes based on the money. However I also vote on the principle of this referendum. This vote should have been done and binding before a single machine was put in place.
