Scammers feign water leak
Two men knocked on a Forest Park woman’s door at an unspecified address about 4 p.m. on Oct. 20, asking if she had water in her basement because her neighbors did.
The woman said she didn’t think so, but escorted them into her basement to check. One of the men went downstairs with her, the other stayed upstairs. The woman became suspicious since the other man did not follow her, and returned upstairs to find the man in her bedroom. She asked both men to leave.
After they left, she noticed 26 rings were taken from her bedroom, along with a small box containing assorted jewelry items.
DUI, hit-and-run
A Chicago woman was involved in a hit-and-run at the intersection of Harlem and I-290 about 3 a.m. on Oct. 27. Police responded to the crash and spotted a Nissan fleeing the scene, traveling north on Circle. Officers curbed the vehicle on the 7300 block of Madison.
Police asked the driver for her license and insurance, and the Chicago woman was unable to provide both documents. She handed officers her ID. A name-check revealed the woman’s license was suspended. Officers smelled alcohol on her breath.
They asked the woman to step out of the car and recite the alphabet, from G to Q. The woman was unable to complete the task, and admitted to drinking a Long Island Ice Tea and tequila. She submitted to a breathe test, and blew above the legal limit of 0.08.
She was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license.
Robber takes iPhone
A Forest Park man was out walking when a man approached him at the intersection of Adams and Hannah about 7:05 p.m. on Oct. 24 and asked him the time. When the man took out his phone to tell the man the time, the man tried to grab the phone from his hands. The victim held onto the phone and put it back in his pocket.
The robber then reached for something in his jacket pocket, which the victim feared was a gun, and said, “give me the phone.” The victim handed over his iPhone 7. The man ran to the 500 block of Thomas, entered a parked car and then drove south.
Dodge Durango flees police
Police spotted a Dodge Durango at the intersection of Harlem and Roosevelt about 4:11 p.m. on Oct. 24. Officers checked the license plate and discovered its owner had a felony warrant out for manufacture and delivery of methamphetamine.
They pulled the vehicle over at the BP parking lot, 7140 Roosevelt Road in Oak Park. As officers got out of their car, the driver sped off, heading north on Harlem at a high rate of speed. The vehicle turned east on Pleasant, made a three-point turn on Maple, and then proceeded west on Pleasant to Harlem and was struck by a car.
The driver and passenger got out of the car at Franklin and started running. Oak Park police later spotted a man matching the passenger’s description on the 200 block of Mason in Chicago. Forest Park police positively identified the 18-year-old Chicago man as the passenger. He was charged with aggravated flee/attempt to elude a police officer.
Pickup truck stolen
A Honda Ridgeline truck was stolen from St. Bernardine’s parking lot about 5:28 p.m. on Oct. 27. The victim told police he was unloading gift baskets from his pickup truck at 800 Elgin for the Pancake Breakfast at St. Bernardine’s the next day. The Forest Park man said he went inside for about 10 minutes, returned to the parking lot and his truck was gone. He said the truck contained about 10 gift baskets.
Fight at Slainte
Police responded to a call about a fight at Slainte about 1 a.m. on Oct. 28. Officers detained two Forest Park men at 7505 Madison St., who seemed “agitated, “kept trying to go around police,” and did not answer officers’ questions, according to the report. Both seemed intoxicated and had bloody noses. Both refused medical attention. They were cited for public fighting.
Burglars break in during dog walk
A woman took her dog for a walk about 8 a.m. on Oct. 26. When she returned to her home on the 1000 block of Lathrop 45 minutes later, she discovered the house’s bedrooms ransacked. Burglars stole a Toshiba laptop and RCA tablet. On the back porch, they left a bag filled with an Xbox gaming system, two Xbox remote controls, an Amazon Alexa, two bottles of gin, jewelry, watches, and keys to the house and car. The victim told police she believed her back and front door were locked.
These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Oct. 22-29, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.
