An avid sailor, skier, and cyclist in his younger years, he loved Forest Park and served on the Zoning Board of Appeals in his retirement. In 1973, he married the late Anne Scafidi.

Richard Scafidi was the father of Sarah (Jeff) Merkley and Katherine Scafidi; and the grandpa of Henry.
