SATURDAY'S RESULTS (JAN. 31)

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. Rita 59, Fenwick 40

Playing in front of a huge home crowd against St. Rita on Friday, the Fenwick High School boys basketball team appeared in great position to pull off an impressive upset. Junior Mike Ballard (15 points) nailed a three-pointer to pull the Friars within 33-32 at 3:05 of the third quarter.

Led by Kentucky-bound guard Charles Matthews, however, the Mustangs (17-2) responded with an emphatic 24-4 run en route to a 59-40 Catholic League win. Matthews scored a game-high 28 points and played excellent defense on Fenwick star guard Mike Smith (10 points).

The Friars earned a split of games over the weekend by edging St. Laurence 76-71 on Jan. 30. Smith and Ballard served as a two-man wrecking crew against the Vikings, scoring 29 and 21 points, respectively.

Fenwick (14-6) visits Mount Carmel on Friday at 7 p.m. The Friars return home against St. Viator on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Jamonte Robinson paced the Panthers with 11 points. Kendall Mack also reached double figures with 10 points and Khalil Walker contributed seven points as the Panthers notched an impressive road at OPRF under first-year head coach Michael Ingram.

Midway through the third quarter, the Panthers took the lead for good, 23-22, on an inside bucket from Lorenzo Moore. Proviso West junior Liddel Davis added a monster two-handed dunk with 3:33 left in the game. The Panthers handled the Huskies' defensive pressure the rest of the way to secure the win.

The rivalry between Trinity and Whitney Young girls basketball teams added another chapter on Friday with the host Dolphins picking up a 60-49 win. Junior Kaitlin Aylward scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Blazers. Annie McKenna also reached double figures with 12 points, and freshman Alisa Fallon chipped in nine points for Trinity (20-3).

In the second half, the Blazers came back from a double-digit deficit a couple of times. A jumper by Aylward midway through the fourth quarter whittled the Dolphins' lead to 46-40. Whitney Young shot well from the free throw line, however, to hold off the Blazers' spirited rally.

BOYS SWIMMING

New Trier 125, Fenwick 61

The Friars lost to the state's top-ranked team, New Trier, 125-61 in a dual meet Saturday in Winnetka. Fenwick wasn't expected to beat New Trier, especially head-to-head, but McGuire was satisfied with the team's performance.

"They were looking pretty good versus New Trier," McGuire said. "We won the medley relay and we had some generally good swims.

"The state meet is there this year and that's one of the advantages to swimming New Trier to swim in their pool is it is good preparation for state. It was the kids' final chance to make the varsity lineup for the Catholic League meet."

Hill won the 100 free in 49.06 and teamed with Hill, Daggs, Smith and McGuire to win the medley relay in 1:40.43. Hill was second in the 50 free in 21.97. Smith equaled that feat in the butterfly in 53.15, as did Ryan Clark in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.42 and Andrew Hipskind in the backstroke in 58.66.

The 200 free relay team of McGuire, Bartecki, Smith and Hill was second in 1:31.16.
