“The ribbers still were here setting up right at 6 a.m.,” Mayor Tony Calderone said Saturday afternoon as he was working the crowd at Altenheim Picnic Grove and beaming while pushing samplings of ribs.

Attendance was down from RibFest’s two previous years (a crowd estimate isn’t available), but spirits and resolve were high. At one point in the early evening, more than 85 cars were sitting in the grove’s grassy, and muddy, parking lot-in addition to the lineup all along Van Buren. Some drivers were stuck with their tires spinning in the mud, but to get to the ‘cue, they kept their cool.
