Berwyn Police arrested Shawn Cassell, 24, of the 300 block of Lathrop Avenue and an accomplice in connection with the shooting of two men in Berwyn on May 11 at 9:47 p.m. at the intersection of 13th Street and East Avenue in Berwyn.
Cassell and Jonathan Morales, 23, of Cicero, were both charged with attempted murder. The two admitted to police a gang affiliation with the Sin City Boyz, a Cicero gang.
Police reported that Cassell allegedly jumped out from behind a large tree, yelling his gang affiliation, then fired on both victims with a .32-caliber semi-automatic weapon. Morales allegedly was a co-conspirator, who drove the getaway vehicle used in the shooting.
One victim was shot once in the left leg, while the second suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The victims are 28 and 29 years old. Both were transported to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, where one was released over the weekend. The other remains under hospitalized.
The weapon was not found, but Berwyn Police sent .32-caliber shell casings to Illinois State Police for investigation.
Cassell was known to Forest Park police, said Deputy Chief Tom Aftanas. Forest Park police assisted Berwyn in several arrests involving Cassell since 2006, including a December 2011 arrest, where Cassell was charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking in Berwyn.
“He seemed to be active in Berwyn and Cicero,” said Aftanas. “We assisted the Berwyn Police Department with help picking him up for an active arrest warrant.”
According to a website, Chicagogangs.org, The Sin City Boyz are a “folks”-affiliated gang composed of primarily white and Hispanic members. Gang territory, according to the website is near 49th Avenue and 13th Street in Cicero (called “Kaponetown”), 35th Street and Clinton Avenue in Berwyn and in Carol Stream and Naperville.
