Maywood Village officials, community leaders and West Cook YMCA board members and staff gathered on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 to formally open Maywood’s Fred Hampton Family Aquatic Center for Center’s first full swim season in many years.

Under an agreement between the Village of Maywood and the West Cook YMCA, the aquatic center at 300 Fred Hampton Way will be managed and operated by the YMCA for the balance of the summer through Tuesday, September 3.

“The opening of the pool and aquatic facilities for the season, especially after a year’s hiatus, is a real cause for celebration for all members of the community who enjoy swimming in an outdoor pool and for the West Cook YMCA which has a long history of operating aquatic programs and properties,” said Jan Pate, president and CEO of the West Cook YMCA, which serves Maywood and nine other west suburban communities.

“We’re pleased to have the opportunity to serve the people of Maywood again this year, for this is another example of how the YMCA operates outside of its own walls to respond to a community need,” she said.

“Our productive partnership with Maywood means that for the first time in many years, swimmers of all ages can enjoy a full summer swim season at the Fred Hampton Family Aquatic Center’s pool,” said Kim Polk, West Cook YMCA’s Aquatics Director, who will supervise the Center’s staff.

“It’s wonderful that the West Cook YMCA can once again ensure that kids, families and seniors in Maywood will have an enjoyable summer of swimming in the Fred Hampton Family Aquatic Center’s pool. This partnership between the Village of Maywood and the Y is a splendid example of the intersection of the YMCA’s missions to advance healthy living youth development and social responsibility,” said David Phelps, West Cook YMCA board chairman.
