Two Maywood men were arrested by Maywood police and charged with the murder of 19-year-old college student DaShamone “Spuddy” McCarty.

McCarty (also known as DaShawn McCarthy) graduated from Proviso East High School in 2012 and had attended Dakota College on an athletic scholarship where he played football and basketball. He was shot and killed, May 16, while a passenger in a car when he returned to Maywood for summer break.

First-degree murder charges were filed against Denzel Edwards, 20, and Larry Ankum, 28, both of Maywood, on June 23.

Maywood Police Chief Tim Curry said Deaundre Carey, 20, a passenger in the vehicle in which McCarty was shot was found to be in possession of a gun and drugs at the time of the shooting. Carey was arrested and is free on bond.
