Martin J. Paul, 84, of Torrance, Calif. and formerly Oak Park, died Sept. 30, 2013 peacefully at home after a five and a half-year battle with pancreatic cancer while surrounded by his loving family. Born in Oak Park on Sept. 4, 1929 to Mary and Joseph Paul, he grew up in Forest Park and attended Proviso Township High School. Upon graduation, he joined R.R. Donnelley Printing Company and became a journeyman pressman. This was the beginning of a lifelong love of the printing, publishing, and graphics arts industry. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1951 through 1953, he married Betty Jean Goersmeyer. They moved to Southern California, raised their two children, and Marty continued to pursue his career in graphic arts. He was elected International Representative for the Amalgamated Lithographers of America in 1957. In 1961, he joined General Printing Ink, a Division of Sun Chemical Corporation, and ultimately advanced to National Litho Product Manager. In 1967, Marty co-founded Bowers Printing Ink Company in California and in 1980 went on to become president and CEO of their U.S. and Canadian branches. During these years he demonstrated a unique advocacy for the graphic arts industry, representing it nationally and internationally, moderating panels, writing, producing, and presenting the complexities of a changing technology. Marty rejoined Sun Chemical in 1987 as Director of Special Projects. He retired in 2003. As an avid golfer, he was an active member of the Palos Verdes Golf Club for over 40 years. Martin Paul is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Betty; children, Bill (Rita) and Sue; grandchildren, Tracey, Tom, Joe and Jenni; great-grandchildren, Mike and Jeannine; sister, Peggy; and his numerous nieces and nephews. He loved good family, good food, and his many good friends. A Memorial Service was held on Oct. 27 at The Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes Estates.
