Despite being frozen out of last week’s event, organizers of Soup and Bread Forest Park are undaunted. The Tuesday evening feast will bring comforting hot soup to the Old School Tavern and Grill on Feb. 4 and 11th and then return to Skrine Chops for Feb. 18, said volunteer organizer Mary Lane.
“Starship Subs will be our guest chef Feb. 4,” Lane said.
The charity event raises money for the Forest Park Food Pantry and Hephzibah Children’s Association.
Soups available Tuesday will be minestrone, black bean, potato, chili and chidren’s favorite “ramen with chicken broth,” Lane said. Bread is provided from Turano bakeries. Participants give a free-will donation that goes to the charities.
Performing music will be the Szurko Trio.
Lane said she’s changed the events from once a month to once a week. The previous event (before cold weather cancelled) was attended by about 50 people and raised $500 for the Food Pantry, Lane said.
The Soup and Bread movement is a loose collaboration of groups in Chicago, Berwyn and Forest Park that hope to bring people together through food and good company. The Chicago branch has even penned a soup cook book.
“We’re trying to make this a very friendly, very grassroots event,” Lane said last year.
The Old School Tavern and Grill is located at 201 Desplaines Ave. Soup’s on 6 – 8 p.m.
