A woman who bought credit cards encoded with stolen account information was arrested after using a fraudulent debit card in River Forest to withdraw money from a Bank of America ATM, River Forest Police said.
Shirley Cameron, age 47, of the 200 block of North Keeler, Chicago, was identified by store personnel as the woman who purchased items and withdrew money at the bank in the 400 block of Park Avenue using account information of a victim in downstate Illinois and a false Indiana driver’s license, said a police statement.
The victim told police she still had her credit card in her possession and it had never physically been lost or stolen.
Police arrested Coleman in the 4200 block of West Maypole Avenue in Chicago during a traffic stop.
River Forest police said Coleman allegedly regularly bought encoded false credit cards in bulk on Chicago’s West Side and used the re-encoded cards until they no longer worked. Police confiscated the other re-encoded cards in Coleman’s possession and notified issuing banks so customers could be identified. Federal agencies are working with River Forest police to identify the source or sources of the re-encoded cards in Chicago.
On April 12, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office approved two counts of Class 3 felony use of forged credit cards and Class 4 felony possession of a fraudulent ID against Cameron.
