Thanks to all who came out on Feb. 27 to celebrate the arts at the Oak Park Art League’s Second Annual Costume Ball Fundraiser, Wig Out! It was a “well-haired” crowd; guests in wigs and costume made the event a great night for people-watching. A His & Hers Royal “Hairness” competition was emceed by State Representative Camille Lilly, who crowned two attendees for best artistic “ornamentation” from the neck up.
Our featured entertainment packed the house and we thank local community officials — Oak Park Mayor Anan Abu-Taleb, River Forest President Cathy Adduci, and Forest Park Mayor Anthony Calderone — for their willingness to take the stage in a Lip Sync Battle to help raise funds for the Art League. After three great performances, it was Cathy Adduci who claimed the coveted Lip Sync Battle trophy for her rendition of Bachman Turner Overdrive’s “Takin’ Care of Business,” supported by a quartet of pink-shagged backup singers and one rockin’ air-guitarist!
Generous support from the local business community included sponsorship and contributions to silent auction packages, plus donations of original artwork from OPAL Artist Members. Auction proceeds, along with donations to the Lip Sync Battle and ticket sales, helped raise nearly $25,000 to support OPAL’s 2016 Art for Social Change programs, education scholarships, and assist with the repair and maintenance of our historic building.
All in all, Wig Out! was a wonderful gathering of community, lending energy and vitality to this year where we begin the five-year countdown to OPAL’s Centennial Anniversary, 2021 — reason to celebrate, so stay tuned for next year’s costume-themed ball!
