Grant-White’s Math Club is off to a great start! Mr. McElligott, along with Ms. Rush, will be running the club this year with multiple sessions to encourage student participation. The following information was shared by Mr. McElligott to explain the main focus and activities of the club as it gets started for this year.
“Our focus this session in math club will be on the 4 Cs of 21st Century Education. Creativity, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Collaboration will all be hit upon during our time in Math Club. Students will be demonstrating the 4Cs by working with a team on a “Problem of the Month” challenge while using an App on their Chromebook called Seesaw as a way of empowering them to document their learning in a format of their choosing.
For the first meeting of math club, our focus will be to get Seesaw up and running on all of their Chromebooks. Students will then be given some time to “play around” with it, with an end goal of creating a simple presentation based around the question, “What is Multiplication?” Students will share their presentations with parents electronically!
In coming weeks, we hope to start diving into a “Problem of the Month.” Problems of the month can be found on the Inside Mathematics website. An overview of what a problem of the month looks like is as follows from the website: The Problems of the Month are nonroutine math problems designed to be used schoolwide to promote a problem-solving theme. Each problem is divided into five levels of difficulty, Level A (primary) through Level E (high school), to allow access and scaffolding for students into different aspects of the problem and to stretch students to go deeper into mathematical complexity. The Problems of the Month were developed by the Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative and are aligned to the Common Core standards.”
