Proviso East (0-5) couldn’t quite get over the hump against the Morton Mustangs (1-4) in a 13-12 loss on Friday night.

In the first half, the teams took turns taking advantage of each other’s mistakes to complete touchdown drives. Morton scored first after an interception was returned to the Pirate 12 yard line. The Pirates then took advantage of two Morton roughing the passer penalties to eventually tie the game on a 9-yard TD pass from Kurt Sturghill to the ever-present Deon Bland.

Down 13-6 in the second half, James Hobson scored on an 18-yard scramble for East to bring the Pirates within 1 point, but that was as close as they were going to get.

Overall, the Pirates were much improved. The defense was in the Mustang backfield all game and the offense was able to sustain the two touchdown drives, but unforced errors and penalties were ultimately too much for them to overcome.

This Friday night they take on the Hornets of Hinsdale South at home.
