The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office released details on the two people killed on the 1500 block of Harlem Avenue on Dec. 6.
The homicide victim has been identified as Lauren McDonald, 28, from Forest Park. The shooter, who then died by suicide, is identified as Kenneth L. Nelson, 28, from Joliet.
Police were called to the 1500 block of Harlem Avenue on Dec. 6 around 5:10 p.m. with reports of two people down in the street.
Officers found a man and a woman on the ground, one in the curb lane and one partially on the sidewalk. Paramedics pronounced both people dead at the scene. They had each suffered gunshot wounds to the head.
On Dec. 6, Forest Park Chief of Police Tom Aftanas said that although it is early in the investigation, it is most likely a murder-suicide. It is suspected the female exited the passenger side door of a vehicle that had been traveling southbound on Harlem Avenue. The man then exited the driver side door and shot her before turning the gun on himself. A gun was recovered at the scene.
The Major Crimes Taskforce has been called in to assist with the investigation.
“This sort of thing is tragic at any time,” said Aftanas. “But around the holidays it’s especially horrible.”
