No one was hurt after a fire ignited inside a Forest Park apartment inside the building at 328-330 Desplaines Ave. on the morning of March 2.
According to Fire Chief Phil Chiappetta, the fire was contained to the kitchen of one of the units in the building, and the tenant of that unit had evacuated by the time firefighters arrived shortly after 8 a.m.
Units arriving at the scene observed heavy smoke coming from a second-floor window on the south side of the building where the unit was located.
Chiappetta said two people were taken to the hospital for “observation” due to the smoky conditions inside the building. Neither person taken to the hospital lived in the unit where the fire was located.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Chiappetta said. River Forest, Oak Park and North Riverside sent mutual aid units to the scene. The fire was quickly extinguished and firefighters could be seen wrapping up operations there around 8:35 a.m.
Steve Glinke, the village of Forest Park’s health and safety director, said the unit involved in the fire was above a ground-floor utility area, which kept water damage to dwellings to a minimum. Apart from the unit where the fire was located, the rest of the apartment building remains habitable, said Glinke.
