Proviso Township High School District 209 is looking to September to finalize its search for a new superintendent.
During the Tuesday, Aug. 13 Board of Education meeting, Samuel Valtierrez, board president, said the search for a new superintendent is ongoing and that as of July 28 the district had received 28 applications.
Valtierrez said the next step will be for each board member to select two applications for a total of 12, which then will be narrowed down to six applicants. That will then be further narrowed down to three in time for the interview decision process, which according to Valtierrez should have begun on Aug. 16.
“Once we do that and we finalize our three candidates, we will conduct final interviews with top candidates and get feedback from stakeholders to finalize our selection,” Valtierrez said.
Valtierrez did not respond to requests for further updates.
According to Valtierrez the timeline is as follows:
Aug. 16 through Aug. 30: Interviews with selected candidates and finalizing a selection.
Aug. 31 through Sept. 17: Negotiations and an appointment of a new superintendent.
The district had previously narrowed down the search, which began following the resignation of former Supt. James L. Henderson in August 2023, to three candidates. But in April, the board chose not to move forward with them.
The new school year kicked off on Thursday, Aug. 15 under the guidance of Interim Supt. Alexander Aschoff, whose contract was renewed by the board during its June 27 meeting. Aschoff and along with Luke Pavone were originally co-interim superintendents for the 2023-24 school year.
