The Forest Park Environmental Control Commission has announced its first annual environmental awards for residents and groups that have made an impact with sustainability efforts and climate action.
“The purpose is to raise awareness and recognize residents who have gone above and beyond to make a difference,” said Karen Rozmus, an ECC board member.
The ECC is made up of seven members appointed by Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins. Board members work to protect clean air, water, natural resources and public health as it relates to environmental sustainability, plus provide educational resources about the environment.
The ECC’s first environmental awards will honor all kinds of players and projects in the community. Categories include those for individuals, community organizations, local businesses and collaborative initiatives.
Rozmus said the number of awards that the ECC gives out will depend on how many people are nominated.
Anyone can nominate a candidate for an award. The public may recognize someone’s efforts by emailing the nomination form to contact@forestpark.net by Sept. 30.
Among other contact and identifying information, the form asks for the person submitting it to describe how the nominee is unique, how they contribute to community sustainability and if the benefits of their work are measurable.
“We are hoping that winning projects can be replicated by others,” Rozmus said. She added that award winners will likely receive a plaque, and possibly, a plant.
“Help us celebrate those making a positive impact in our environment,” ECC officials said in a statement.
