The Harlem Post was a local weekly newspaper printed in German for the local German population. Its first edition was published on Sept. 12, 1895. The paper’s April 8, 1897 edition included the following news about an exciting upcoming event:

“An athletic performance will take place in Gaden’s Hall the evening of Saturday, April 24th. There will be bag punching as well as six rounds of a boxing contest. Music will be provided by the Gymnastics Club Band. The performance will start at 8:15 p.m., followed by dancing at 9:30 p.m.

In the same edition, Henry Putz’s shoe store, located at 56 Desplaines Avenue, advertised their big selection of slip-on confirmation shoes for the upcoming confirmation season. White shoes with buckles and straps were marked down from $1.25 to $1.00, and white toe confirmation shoes with bows valued at $1.00 were on sale for 80 cents.
