The executive director of Forest Park’s leading business organization said Tuesday that the closing of a third-generation business on Madison Street appears imminent.

According to Laurie Kokenes of the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce and Development, Trage Bros. is going out of business. Customers have allegedly been told by sales and delivery staff of the store’s fate, said Kokenes. Owners Bill and John Trage have also been unreachable, she said.

“It’s a shame,” Kokenes said of the appliance and electronics store’s end. “It’s very much of a shame for them and for the street.”

Trage Bros, 7440 Madison, has been handed down through generations of family members. Brother Bill has traditionally been the eyes and ears of the store, managing the business on a day-to-day basis, said Kokenes. As of late, John has taken over those duties. Kokenes said she is not certain of the circumstances of the store’s closing or when it may finally lock the doors. She described the company as an “institution” in Forest Park that has provided goods and services to a countless list of customers.

A call during regular business hours to the store Tuesday went immediately to voicemail. A sign in the window states the retailer is closed for inventory purposes.
