It has been an ugly mess, but the village of Forest Park appears to be on the right track with respect to resolving the issues surrounding Gaetano’s, the popular restaurant at 7636 Madison. While the village carries its share of blame for this debacle, the burden is now appropriately on the business to make the case for why its haphazard expansion should be allowed to stand. A report from architects or engineers hired by the business could come to the village within a few weeks. The expansion fails to meet a number of local regulations and, since being slapped with a stop-work order in September, has remained empty.

Ideally, there’s a solution that doesn’t involve tearing the structure down. But the council shouldn’t be too quick to pull that option from the menu, either.
