A semi-tractor trailer truck that failed to reduce speed as traffic slowed on Interstate-290 near Desplaines Avenue rear-ended a school bus containing 24 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders, earlier Friday morning.
The accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the left-center lane of the highway, a dispatcher from the Illinois State Police said.
There were no major injuries, “just bumps and bruises,” and everybody on scene refused treatment, according to the dispatcher.
The truck driver, whose vehicle ran into the back of the school bus, will likely be cited for failure to reduce speed, the dispatcher said.
Both the bus and truck sustained considerable damage and were removed from the highway, but traffic between Wolf Road and Desplaines Avenue remains very heavy.
Currently, the state police are not aware of the trucking company the driver was working for, nor do they have information on which school district the kids in the bus were from.
The bus did not contain District 91 students, a district official told the Forest Park Review.
