No matter where you want to go in town, you can’t get there from here.
Try going inside Forest Park National Bank for a change. There is a new artist on display there. She is Jackey Ruechert Lakey of Oak Park. Ms. Lakey teaches at the Oak Park Art League. Her specialties are water colors and mixed media. Some of her work is on display along Harrison Street in the Art District. It’s hard to leave once you stop to admire her work.
For the quality, the prices are reasonable.
Iceland seems to be the new destination of choice these days. Christina Respass and Chris Cashin will be leaving for that country in a few weeks. So the Forest Park Bank got them some Icelandic Kroners (crowns). This Nordic currency is lovely to look at as well as interesting to learn about. Pictured on the 500 note is, Jon Sigutosson, a leader of the Icelandic Independent Movement in the 19th century.
A famous church is depicted on the 1,000 kroner note; the architect of this Brynjolfskirkja is Brynjolfur Sveinsson. You probably figured out that the ending “sson” means “son.” The lady in the big hat is on the 50 note. She lived from 1646 to 1715 and gained fame by teaching women how to do embroidery! One of her students was the bishop’s wife. For this she gets her picture on the 5,000 note. What a country! Her name was Ragnheidur Jonsdottir (John’s daughter); women’s names end in dottir. The government wanted to honor women and their contribution of Icelandic culture.
There are many beautiful sights to see in Iceland, the most famous being the blue lagoon. If Christina brings us some such scenes, we will certainly pass them along to you.
Sherre Bedow is still working at keeping Saint Bernardine alumni/ae together. That includes friends and neighbors of the school and church. This year’s reunion will be held in the school basement on Sept. 23 from 5 until 10 p.m. Remember, everybody and anybody are invited. Sherre has been organizing these reunions for nine years (a reunion every three years). Nothing delights her more than seeing a big crowd with everybody having a great time. But probably someone else could be thinking about assisting Sherre for the next reunion(s). Cost of the dinner, to be catered by Jimmy’s, will include a DJ and music. All this following Mass at 5 p.m. Questions? Sherre is in Topeka, Kansas at 785-633-1616.
