This year, the total number of Forest Park District 91 students who went on to enroll at Proviso Township High Schools District 209 increased for the first time in at least five years, according to data provided by D209.

Most D91 students who attend a Proviso school attend Proviso East High School, with 111 students at East at the beginning of this school year. Thirty-eight students enrolled at Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA).

The total number of D91 students who went on to D209 increased this year by 18 percent, from 126 last school year to 149 at the beginning of the 2019 school year. The number of students attending PMSA declined year over year — from 46 to 38 — while the number of students attending Proviso East increased, from 80 to 111.

Out of the 10 schools that send students to Proviso, Melrose Park School District 89 sent the most this year — 1,687 students — and Komarek (North Riverside) sent the fewest, with just 10 students. Forest Park’s D91 sent the seventh highest number of all the feeder schools. The total includes students who enroll in Proviso from out of district, private schools, or who don’t indicate where they come from.

At a board of education meeting in February, Superintendent Louis Cavallo said 28 students applied to PMSA for the 2020 school year, and 19 were accepted. “That’s a third of our class that is going to PMSA next year,” he said at the meeting.

Cavallo added: “That’s quite a high percentage of our students going to PMSA next year, so we’re happy.”
