Disappointing but prudent for the Forest Park Village Council to unanimously approve a contract for the repaving of the parking lot at the Blue Line depot even though it lacks even a nod to a more environmentally sound design.

Commissioner Jessica Voogd pushed hard for a more sustainable design which would include permeable pavers, landscaping, water retention features. But she finally relented, facing the harsh reality that in this COVID moment, when village finances are fully maxed out, there is no extra money for these upgrades.

The lot needs fixing, state money has finally been pried loose to fund the fix, and, in this moment of underuse of the lot as public transit sits largely unused, it is prudent to get this job done.

But good for Voogd to focus Forest Park on a future where sustainability is part of every conversation.
