In the 1970’s the Forest Park Review featured a weekly gardening column written by Elsie Kehm. Her features included the imported garden of Mr. and Mis Wienhold at 911 Hannah, which had summer poinsettias, carnations foromo Germany and geraniums from Switzerland. She celebrated the begonias of Mrs. Dorthy Korbel and Mrs. Pat Hatcher, of 7651 Adams. The Berlingers, from 529 Beloit had prize-sized Idaho potatoes and tomatoes that weighed well over a pound. She celebrated the garden hedges around town, ornaments in gardens, and the patio’s that were carefully considered in her love of the remarkable gardening in Forest Park.
