The Proviso East High School Ecology Club broke ground on its brand-new pollinator garden on March 15. The invitation said “rain or shine,” but instead there was snow.

East biology teacher Ann McElhatton said during the ceremony that the garden was made possible by an Illinois Department of Natural Resources Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant. Individuals have also donated seeds and gardening equipment, she said.

“We’re very grateful for everyone bringing this together for Proviso East,” said McElhatton during the ceremony.

April 22, Earth Day, will provide another opportunity to celebrate the new garden, said McElhatton, and she invited people to follow the club at PEHS_ecology on Instagram, where names for the new garden can be suggested.
