One person was killed in a violent head-on collision Tuesday afternoon in the 1600 block of Desplaines Avenue, a crash that ended with a car engulfed in flames and the road shut down well into the evening.
Chris Chin, deputy chief of the Forest Park police, said a box truck and sedan crashed head-on on Desplaines Avenue near the intersection with Greenburg Road around 4 p.m. The sedan caught fire after the crash, Chin said, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was in the sedan at the time of the crash.
The driver and sole occupant of the box truck was transported to the hospital in stable condition, according to a police department press release.
Desplaines Avenue was closed for several hours Tuesday, Chin said, and did not open until around 11 p.m. as an accident reconstruction team from the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force (WESTAF) conducted its investigation. Chin said it appeared the sedan crossed the roadway’s center line before the crash.
The person killed in the crash had not been identified as of Wednesday morning.
The accident remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash or can provide any additional information is asked to contact the Forest Park Police Department’s criminal investigations division at 708-366-2425 or by email at detectives@forestpark.net.
