Community Center accepting donations for Ukraine

The Forest Park American Legion and the village’s Howard Mohr Community Center are teaming up to collect donations of basic goods to benefit the citizens of war-torn Ukraine.

Donations can be dropped off at the Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd., or Breit & Clean Cleaners, 7722 Madison Street now through April 1. Organizers are asking for a litany of basic clothing and other items, including shoes, blankets, coats, toiletries, baby formula, shampoo, deodorant, bandages, cough medicine and more.

Mayor signs monarch pledge

Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins has signed on to the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge in an effort to protect the monarch butterfly, according to the Village of Forest Park.

The Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, organized by the National Wildlife Federation, is designed to help preserve the monarch butterfly, which has seen its population decline by more than 90 percent worldwide. The pledge brings together cities “committing to create habitat for the monarch butterfly and pollinators, and to educate residents about how they can make a difference at home and in their community,” according to a newsletter sent out by the village last week.

Residents of Forest Park are urged to do their part to preserve the butterfly by visiting the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago website at mwrd.org. There, residents can request free milkweed seeds for their garden. Milkweed is the sole food source for monarch caterpillars.

Fillmore Street partially closed after water main break

Eastbound Fillmore Street between Ferdinand Avenue and Beloit Avenue will remain closed for “several weeks” as crews work to repair a broken water main, the village said in its weekly newsletter.

The eastbound lane will reopen when the street restoration work has been completed.
