Police recovered 54 pieces of recently stolen mail, most of which fell out of a dark-colored Audi sedan as it left the scene of an alleged mail theft at a local post office.

According to a police report, an officer was on patrol a little after 1 a.m. on March 14 when he noticed two people near the Audi “tampering” with mailboxes outside the post office at 417 Desplaines Ave. When the officer activated his lights, the suspects got in the car and drove away but failed to close the trunk.

As the Audi sped off, mail reportedly flew out of the trunk onto Desplaines Avenue and Madison Street.

Officers were unable to stop the fleeing vehicle and it ultimately left the area
on the eastbound Eisenhower Expressway.

An inspector from the U.S. Postal Service was contacted to retrieve and redistribute the stray mail.
