Annual picnic in The Grove in 1945
This photo was the cover image on the June 28, 1945 Forest Park Review, featuring a group of children from St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church School marching to the Altenheim Grove for the Annual Picnic. Parents and children brought picnic baskets, and food was served on the grounds as well. At the time, many local men were actively serving in World War II, food was rationed (soap and other household staples) and monitored in books. American patriotism was very high — as seen by the American flags held by students as they walked down Madison Street (note the trolley line in the brick street).
