Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford, one of the state’s most powerful legislators was the victim of a carjacking in Broadview on Dec. 21, Broadview Police Chief Thomas Mills said in a statement released Tuesday.
The incident happened Tuesday on the 2000 block of South 20th Ave., at approximately 9:45 p.m., police said. That’s when three people in masks who were inside of a Durango SUV, hijacked the Mercedes Benz SUV that contained the state senator and her husband, Eric McKennie. The couple lives in Maywood.
“Multiple gunshots were fired during the incident,” Mills said, adding that the senator and her husband were both unharmed. The suspects fled the scene in both the Mercedes Benz and the Durango, he said.
A report by the Chicago Tribune noted that the Mercedes has since been recovered by Broadview Police, according to Mills.
Broadview Police are currently analyzing possible surveillance video to help identify the suspects, Mills said, adding that the larger investigation is ongoing.
