Just after 5 a.m. on June 9, Forest Park police were dispatched to help Oak Park police with a burglary that had just occurred in the 800 block of Maple in Oak Park. Forest Park police found a suspect matching the given description of the burglar near Elgin and Jackson. When police turned on their emergency lights, the pursued woman threw a vacuum and soccer ball she was carrying into bushes and started running. Police caught her and reported that she had a deep laceration on her wrist. Oak Park police took the woman into custody and transported her to Loyola Hospital. Forest Park police followed a blood trail to the 600 block of Elgin, where they found a shattered basement window at a residence. The resident wished to sign complaints against the woman, who police determined was a missing person suffering from a possible mental health crisis when she disappeared earlier this month. Police suggested that, because the woman required surgery and further medical and mental health care, the resident should delay criminal charges against her, since they could be filed later.

Battery

Police responded to Rhythm & Blues Cafe on Madison Street just after midnight on June 5 for a battery that had just occurred inside the bar. The victim said he and another man, who he’d never met, got into a verbal dispute over social media, then the man punched him in the mouth before security removed him from the bar. According to police, the victim was bleeding from a cut on his lower lip and wished to sign complaints against the offender. Police made contact with the offender, who they said appeared highly intoxicated and had a laceration covered in blood on his knuckles. He was placed in custody and charged with battery.

Possession of controlled substance

While on patrol on June 6, police pulled over a driver near Harlem and Madison who they saw smoking out of a crack pipe while driving. Police asked the man if there were any drugs in the vehicle, and he said there was some crack in the driver’s side door. The man told police he’s been smoking crack for two years and buys it in Columbus Park. He was charged with possession of controlled substance and possession of drug equipment.

DUI

On the afternoon of June 6, police saw a traffic crash in the 1000 block of Des Plaines Ave. Police reported that a driver crashed into two parked cars in a parking lot. Police asked the offending driver to get out of his car and reported that he smelled of alcohol, had red and bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech. He agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests but couldn’t understand directions, according to police. Police found a bottle of vodka in the man’s car. He was charged with driving under the influence, having a BAC over 0.08 — his was .26, over three times the legal limit — operating an uninsured vehicle and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Garbage dumping

Police responded to a Dunlop Avenue residence on June 7 after Commissioner Michelle Melin-Rogovin reported that, on June 5, she returned home to find three large garbage bags of glass on her carport. She told police she thought the trash was likely from residents who are displeased about the village’s change in its waste disposal and recycling service. According to the police report, she said she’s “experienced slight retaliatory episodes from residents in the past, including a previous unrelated dumping.”

Hit and run

Police were dispatched to the intersection of Madison and Des Plaines on June 9 for a hit and run. There, a woman said she was driving east on Madison when a Ford SUV hit her rear bumper, then the driver fled. Police confirmed the accident with video from a street camera and relocated to the Berwyn residence that the offending vehicle was registered to. Police reported that the man living at the Berwyn residence had a car with damage consistent with that involved in the accident. He was cited with leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Aggravated DUI

Police were dispatched to the 7600 block of Harrison on June 8 around 1 a.m. for three men fighting in the street. Police separated the men, one of whom said he was a passenger in a Hyundai when a Dodge hit the car on I-290, fled the scene, and got off the expressway at Des Plaines. The passenger in the Hyundai confronted the driver of the Dodge, opening the door and physically fighting with the driver. Police reported that the driver of the Dodge had bloodshot eyes and mumbled speech. They found a beer can in the Dodge and that the driver had a suspended license for DUI.

The passenger of the Hyundai was charged with battery, criminal trespass to a vehicle and theft from a motor vehicle, since he took the car keys from the Dodge. The Dodge driver was charged with driving under the influence, an aggravated DUI, operating an uninsured vehicle with suspended registration, having a suspended license, and having open alcohol.
