Having lost in Saturday’s winners bracket semifinals at the 58th annual No Gloves softball tournament, Signature not only needed to win three straight games in the losers bracket on Sunday to advance to the final round, but they would’ve also needed to defeat the tournament’s sole remaining unbeaten team twice if fortunate enough to get there.
The task was daunting, but in hot and humid weather, Signature got the job done. The team knocked off 45’s, Flashback, and Iron in that order to advance out of the loser’s bracket.
Signature then faced unbeaten Whale and needed to win twice. Signature defeated Whale 6-4 in extra innings, forcing an additional game to decide the title.
In the final game, Whale looked poised to seal the deal with a commanding 7-0 lead after 5 ½ innings. But Signature erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the contest, then got a sacrifice fly from Spencer Mahoney in the bottom of the seventh to pull out an improbable 8-7 victory and walk off with the championship trophy.
Mahoney and his teammate Ty McCullough were named No Gloves Co-Most Valuable Players.
